Health & Safety Manager

The Safety Manager is charged with the responsibility for ensuring safety risks are identified and removed so that GSM employees are working safely every hour every day.

Key Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the Health and Safety Manager is to ensure the focus of every GSM employee is in creating a safe manufacturing environment for themselves and their co-workers.  The Health and Safety Manager is responsible to expertly prepare all employees to identify risks, report and remedy unsafe conditions and prevent risks whenever possible. Other responsibilities that are specific to this position are:

  • Prepares our work force to act appropriately during an emergency. 
  • Educates the entire workforce to recognize potential hazards
  • Teaches employees how to properly and permanently eliminate safety threats
  • Listens to employees who voice safety concerns and taking appropriate actions to solve issues
  • Conducts safety inspections of GSM manufacturing structures, equipment and processes to identify and mitigate risks
  • Draws information from external experts including but not limited to insurance providers, underwriters, medical journals, other manufacturers to obtain the most current prevention and best practice information
  • Maintains expert OSHA compliance knowledge
  • Accompanies OSHA Compliance Officers and INDOT Officers during site audits
  • Responds to OSHA findings
  • Prepares and reports recordable items to OSHA as required
  • Reviews the OSHA log monthly to ensure it is up to date and accurate.
  • Implements new safety standards as released
  • Develops effective safety training for new hires & annual training for existing employees
  • Reporting Safety performance metrics and resolutions to GSM Management Team members
  • Selects appropriate safety supplies and equipment as needed
  • Maintains up to date Safety information (SDS, Injury Log, Non-conformance) using the GSM Enterprise System
  • Facilitates problem solving efforts to get to the root cause of near misses, property damage and incidents with employees
  • Collaborates with Curriculum Development Specialist, Training & Development Manager, Certified Machine Skill Instructors, supervisors and operators to ensure safety improvement ideas are successfully communicated and incorporated into our processes
  • Maintains safety manuals
  • Participates in PMA Safety Committee
  • Submits safety survey information to selected association
  • Ensures GSM drivers are operating according to INDOT standards
  • Plans for evacuation, emergency response, storm procedures, temperature extremes
  • Develops systems that ensure exquisite safety & hygiene for all employees
  • Develops a strong relationship with occupational health service providers to ensure quality care and follow up with employees when services are needed

Qualifications and Competencies: To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess excellent interpersonal and secretarial skills, be able to produce coherent written documents that are free of spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, maintain an optimistic and supportive attitude, and maintain the strictest confidence regarding all issues and information regarding the company’s operations, its employee, financial matters, and personal matters of which the employee may become aware in the course of their work.

The individual will also maintain competency with the following programs and equipment:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Visio
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Office telephone system
  • OSHA Log & Regulation Documents
  • Vantage & IQS


  • MS Degree in EHS is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
  • OSHA 30 Hour Trainer (preferred)

Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience coordinating manufacturing safety programs with 100 or more employees
